Sociology Graduate Student Association (2018-Present):
During his first year at LSU, Rob became apart of the Sociology Graduate Student Association (SGSA). During this time he ran for and was granted an officer position within the organization. Working with the other officers Rob developed and implemented programming that was directed at the sociology graduate students. Now in his second year Rob is working towards developing the organizations community outreach and advocacy efforts. He also developed and manages the SGSA website.
Peadagogy Talking Group (2019-Present):
Currently at LSU there is not a Teaching Sociology course to prepare graduate students to teach undergraduate seminars. To address this gap in the curriculum Matchett designed and implemented a pedagogy talking group. The group met bi-weekly once a year and discussed issues such as: accessibility, teaching difficult topics, managing class sizes, and more.

Seedling Distribution 2018:
As a part of the annual Hunger Awareness Week activities led by Dr. Melissa Swauger, Rob participated in the annual seedling distribution. Rob volunteered at both distribution locations which included the Chevy Chace Community Center and Zion Lutheran Church. At this event, Rob distributed buckets of soil to the clients and assisted them in getting the gardening materials to their cars. The seedling project provides individuals living in Indiana County access to nutritional foods. Clients who participate in the event receive seedlings, soil, and other gardening materials that are needed to grow healthy foods.
Soil Mixing 2018:
As a part of the annual Hunger Awareness Week activities led by Dr. Melissa Swauger, Rob participated in a soil mixing activity for the seedling project. Taking place at the Zion Lutheran Church in Indiana Pa, Rob, alongside other students mixed soil that would be used for the seedling project. The seedling project provides individuals living in Indiana County access to nutritional foods. Clients who participate in the event receive seedlings, soil, and other gardening materials that are needed to grow healthy foods. At the soil mixing event, students made 247 bags of soil that would be distributed during the seedling project.
Navajo Nation 2017:
As a part of a Global Service Learning Initiative Led by Dr. Melanie Hildebrandt, through Amizade and IUP’s Department of Sociology, Rob traveled to the Navajo Nation. During his time in the Navajo Nation, Rob learned about the Navajo culture and participated in various service projects that reflected the needs of the individuals. Service projects included leveling earth for the construction of a new sweat lodge, moving a buildup of ash and lava rocks that were built up from conducting sweats, mixing mud and applying it to the outside of a Hogan, sorting through materials at a local thrift shop, and feeding animals on a sheep farm.
Seedling Distribution 2017:
As a part of IUP’s annual Hunger Awareness Week Led by Dr.Melissa Swauger, Rob assisted with the Seedling Project at the Chevy Chase Community Center in Indiana PA. The Seedling Project is a project that allows individuals in Indiana county to come in and get soil, and different plants that provide fresh foods to plant in their gardens. For this project, Rob was stationed outside where he passed out buckets and helped people carry supplies to their car.
